As we step into the fun month of February, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the magic of books and cultivate a love of reading in our elementary students. That’s why I like to celebrate We Love to Read Month in my elementary library. Here are some tips to make this month an engaging celebration of reading:
1. Create Fun Book Displays
Get their attention right away with engaging book displays. Themes such as friendship, love, polar animals, crafts, football, Black History Month, Groundhog Day, Valentineโs Day, and the Presidents can add a seasonal touch. Be sure to tailor displays to your students’ interests, making your collection uniquely appealing and ready to spread a love of reading.
2. Students Share a Love of Reading
Empower your students to become reading ambassadors by providing a space for them to share their favorite books. A colorful “I Love to Read” library bulletin board can be an interactive hub for students and staff to exchange and discover reading recommendations.
3. Host Interactive Storytime Sessions
Bring some excitement into your library with themed storytime sessions. I like to do a fun Valentine Storytime with my youngest library classes. Use engaging February picture books, incorporate fun songs, props, and activities, and watch as your students enthusiastically embrace the We Love to Read celebration.
4. Literacy Events Support a Love of Reading
Take advantage of upcoming events like a book fair in February to create a school-wide celebration for We Love to Read Week. Choose a unique theme for each day, encouraging everyone to play along! Popular choices like “Poem in Your Pocket Day” and “Book Character Day” will keep the reading excitement going.
5. Consider a Reading Challenge
Spark excitement with a motivational reading challenge that encourages exploration of new genres, topics, or types of books. A simple book list or Bingo board can become a fun way to encourage a love of reading.
Your elementary library is poised to become a vibrant hub of reading love. Whether through engaging book displays, student recommendations, interactive storytime, literacy events, or reading challenges, each step helps us celebrate! I’m here to support you every step of the way!
Here’s to a month overflowing with reading love! โค๏ธ
