Monday was our School Geography Bee. This is the 5th one that I’ve done since I’ve been a school librarian, and I always have the same uneasy feeling during the bee. I worry that the kids are feeling humiliated, because the questions are so dificult that more than half of the students are out at the end of the 2nd round (And they have to get 2 wrong answers to be out!). This year, our last round went so long because all 4 kids kept getting their answers wrong and the official rules state that if everyone is eliminated, they all get to stay in. We had to continue the competition to Tuesday because it was still going when the dismissal bell rang at 3:10! Fortunately, we were down to two students (and 4th graders, at that!), so the Championship Round didn’t take very long the next afternoon. I will say that I was very surprised at the pride the two finalists felt at the end and at the strong support and admiration they received from their classmates. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all! I still think we need a Geography Club or something next year leading up to the big event, so that some kids can have a better chance to prepare!
